RULAAC Petitions Imo CP Over Alleged Torture, Unlawful Detention of 21-Year-Old Nursing Trainee

-

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) has petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, over the alleged unlawful arrest, torture, and prolonged detention of 21-year-old nursing trainee, Miss Nmesoma Chukwunyere.

In a petition signed by its Executive Director, Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma, RULAAC said the young woman, a trainee nurse at Mother of Mercy Hospital and Maternity, Orlu, was arrested on July 15, 2025, by officers of the Orlu Police Division while working part-time at Evergreen Pharmacy, Umudiato, Orlu.

Her arrest was reportedly linked to a robbery incident at the residence of the pharmacy’s owner, Mr. Declan, which occurred on June 22, 2025.

According to her father, Mr. Gabriel Ekechukwu, Miss Nmesoma was subjected to torture and threats — including threats of being shot in the leg — until she made a statement under duress. Despite her consistent declaration of innocence, RULAAC noted that no incriminating evidence was found in her apartment and her bank records showed only routine tuition payments from her sponsor.

The group added that former pharmacy workers initially cleared her of any involvement in the crime, but later reversed their statements after she was transferred from Orlu to the notorious “Tiger Base” in Owerri, allegedly at the request of the complainant.

RULAAC condemned the police handling of the case, describing it as a violation of constitutional rights and an abuse of police powers.

The group urged the Commissioner of Police to: Order Miss Nmesoma’s immediate release, noting that she has been in custody for more than three months without charge, Investigate officers at Orlu Division and Tiger Base, Owerri, accused of torture and coercion, Prevent undue influence from the pharmacy owner, Mr. Declan and Ensure the case is handled fairly, transparently, and in line with the rule of law.

“RULAAC is deeply concerned that the unlawful detention of this young nursing trainee is not only an assault on her fundamental rights but also a grave injustice capable of destroying her future. We therefore urge your urgent and personal intervention,” the petition read in part.
