RULAAC Urges Tinubu To Halt Clampdown On Dissent, Prioritise Human Rights

-

The Rule of Law Advocacy and Accountability Centre (RULAAC) has urged the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration, to halt further clampdown on dissents and prioritise human rights.

The Executive Director of RULAAC, Okechukwu Nwanguma said: “President Tinubu’s thick skin over growing concerns about his government’s outrageous actions violating human rights and civil liberties undermine democracy and threaten national stability.

“The administration’s tactics, including the harassment and arrest of dissenters, are contributing to a climate of fear and repression.

“The misuse of terrorism charges against peaceful activists, and the judiciary’s complicity in these actions raises alarms about the rule of law and the protection of citizens’ rights in Nigeria.

“Tinubu’s government has trampled upon and eroded rather than uphold democratic values, failed to ensure freedom of expression, and address public grievances effectively.”

The activist stated that for the umpteenth time, RULAAC is calling on President Tinubu to respect and protect democratic principles, engage with citizens, and combat the challenges of hardship and insecurity as these are crucial for fostering a more inclusive and just society.

“The government must halt further clampdown and abuse of power, including the reported plan to arrest Omoyele Sowore and prioritize human rights. This is fundamental to rebuilding trust between the government and the populace. It is vital that civil society steps up strong advocacy and civic engagement to ensure that the rights of all Nigerians are upheld,” said Nwanguma.
