The Silent Heroes Awards Initiative (SHA) has commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his leadership approach, professionalism and commitment to strengthening public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
The founder of SHA, Comrade Odita Sunday, said Disu’s leadership reflected the importance of purposeful command, institutional reforms and people-oriented policing in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Odita said effective police leadership must go beyond operational efficiency to embrace accountability, responsiveness and a commitment to protecting citizens’ rights and safety.
According to him, effective leadership in the security sector requires a clear vision, discipline, professionalism and the ability to inspire officers to fulfil their constitutional responsibilities.
“Leadership in the security sector goes beyond occupying an office or issuing directives. It is about setting standards, inspiring personnel, strengthening institutions and building public trust through professional conduct and measurable results,” he said.
Odita added that the office of the Inspector-General of Police carried enormous responsibility, with Nigerians expecting the police to demonstrate professionalism, accountability and a strong commitment to public safety.
“We recognise the importance of leadership that places service, accountability and the safety of citizens at the centre of policing. The office of the Inspector-General of Police carries enormous responsibility, and the expectations of Nigerians are equally high,” he said.
The SHA founder stressed that public trust remained a critical component of effective policing, noting that sustained engagement between the police and the communities they serve was essential to crime prevention and improved security outcomes.
He said modern policing required a combination of intelligence gathering, operational efficiency, respect for human rights and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Odita also highlighted the importance of police personnel welfare, continuous professional training and improved operational capacity, saying these were necessary to motivate officers to discharge their duties effectively.
He noted that police officers who worked under demanding and often dangerous conditions deserved institutional support, professional recognition and leadership that encouraged integrity and excellence.
“The men and women who serve in the security sector make enormous sacrifices, often away from the public spotlight. Recognising their service and encouraging exemplary leadership are important steps towards building stronger and more responsive institutions,” he said.
Explaining the objectives of the Silent Heroes Awards Initiative, Odita said the organisation was committed to recognising individuals whose leadership, service and contributions had made meaningful differences in society, particularly in security, governance, community development and national advancement.
He added that celebrating excellence could encourage responsible leadership, promote professionalism and inspire more Nigerians to contribute to national development.
According to him, recognition should not be based solely on titles or positions but should reflect character, commitment to duty, institutional impact and service to humanity.
Odita urged Nigerians to support efforts to strengthen the country’s security institutions, stressing that security was a shared responsibility requiring cooperation among government agencies, communities, civil society organisations and the private sector.
He expressed optimism that sustained reforms, professional leadership and stronger partnerships between the police and citizens would contribute to improved public safety and greater confidence in law enforcement.
The SHA founder reiterated the initiative’s commitment to promoting excellence, integrity and service, while encouraging public officers to remain focused on their responsibilities to Nigerians.
He said the ultimate measure of leadership in the security sector was its impact on citizens’ lives, institutional effectiveness and public confidence in those entrusted with their protection.
