Six Feared Dead in Lagos Boat Accident as Emergency Response Draws Criticism

-

At least six passengers have been confirmed dead, and four others rescued following a boat accident along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun Water Channel in Lagos State.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has sparked public outrage, particularly over the absence of visible emergency response teams at the scene.

Confirming the development via social media, a user identified as Chuks Eric wrote: “Six passengers have been confirmed dead and four rescued following a boat accident along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun Water Channel in Lagos State.”

Another social media user, Duke of Africa, criticised the response to the incident, alleging a lack of preparedness by authorities.

“No single emergency response team in sight! This is Lagos, the city with the largest economy in Africa, not having a suitable waterways emergency response team,” he wrote. He further accused the Lagos State government of incompetence, claiming that the deaths were avoidable.

As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the cause of the accident remain unclear, and there has been no official statement from the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), or emergency agencies such as the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

Boat accidents are a recurring concern on Lagos waterways, which are heavily used for transportation due to persistent traffic congestion on roads.

Despite repeated assurances by the state government on improving water transport safety, incidents involving capsized or collided boats continue to raise questions about the enforcement of safety regulations, the availability of life jackets, and the effectiveness of emergency response systems.

Residents and waterway users have renewed calls for improved safety standards, better monitoring of commercial boat operators, and the deployment of well-equipped emergency response teams across Lagos waterways to prevent further loss of lives.
