Activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, appeared in court on Monday to face trial over allegations of making false online publications against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Department of State Services (DSS) arraigned Sowore on five-count charges related to cybercrimes, defamation, and incitement, according to information released by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
An update shared by NTA Network (@NTANewsNow) stated that the DSS accused Sowore of publishing false posts deemed injurious to the person and office of the President.
“The Department of State Service charged him on five counts, including cybercrimes, defamation, and incitement,” the NTA reported.
Details of Sowore’s plea were not immediately available at the time of filing this report, while the court is expected to fix dates for further hearings in the matter.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate and long-time government critic, has previously faced legal actions linked to his activism and publications.
The case has continued to attract public attention amid ongoing debates on press freedom, cybercrime laws and freedom of expression in Nigeria.
