Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has again aimed at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, accusing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of losing its independence and acting on presidential orders rather than functioning as an autonomous anti-graft body.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sowore argued that the EFCC “has become a joke,” claiming it now operates to “carry out the president’s wishes” instead of independently investigating financial crimes. He said that if the President can simply direct the commission to act on his behalf, then “its independence exists only on paper.” He capped the post with the phrase “C’est fini!” alongside his familiar #RevolutionNOW hashtag.
The remarks come amid controversy over the EFCC’s handling of the Osun State government account, which the commission had earlier frozen before reportedly moving to unfreeze it — a reversal some Nigerians link to presidential intervention.
The post has since drawn a wave of reactions, with Nigerians split between those who agree that the EFCC lacks true independence and those accusing Sowore of playing politics or misrepresenting the law establishing the commission.
Abdullahi (@Abdullah_24i) said: “What I want is for any fraudulent people found in the Osun State government to be prosecuted properly, thereby allowing the government funds to be used. I wish the EFCC could look into other government spending”
Okomeragu (@DerealCEO), said: “@officialEFCC has always done the bidding of those in power. We need to understand that until an entity with total independence on truth and consequences emerges to curtail the actions of these corrupt people. There will always be a worsening society. An anti-corrupt group who report not to man but to the deadly forces of our land should be set up. This is Africa for goodness ‘ sake and not the Western world. Let’s follow the laws of nature according to our forefathers with a more civilised approach. Then we will see the desired change.”
John Johnson (@Gbenakari76) also has something to say: ” The Head of the EFCC should resign now to preserve his integrity, which Tinubu had put a dent in. If he is not resigned by now, he must be a puppet on a string…who is not supposed to hold the position in the 1st place.”
Ademola Adeniyi Philip (@Adexxphilip) states: “When #EFCC froze Osun State Government account you people shouted at top voice. Saying if the state is under APC government, such action will not come in now the PBAT ordered to unfreeze the account another noose from wallers.”
tweet oracles (@OraclesTweet) notes: “Now you see why EFCC CANNOT prosecute corruption cases in Nigeria 🇳🇬; now you understand why Yahaya Bello cannot be arrested. Nigeria 🇳🇬 is not Ready. These agencies should be independent. This is why INEC Judiciary are not independent. Democracy is nah fake for democracy. For Nigeria 🇳🇬 to develop quickly, we need a President that can strengthen our institutions, not weaken them.”
S.M.A (@sto0511M) also states: “Look at this hater of Nigeria 🇳🇬 encourages lawlessness u want to be talking about independence, thank God the president has stepped in so that people like u who peddle lies to d gullible Nigerians can be put to shame, SUG president veru unpatriotic person.”
EmX (@mr_nzeakor) said: “If the president didn’t intervene, you will still complain that he is using state power against opposition. The main question now should be to confirm the reasons as to why EFCC froze the account first: was it factual or just political?”
Temitope (@topeapoola) on his part, said: “EFCC is not an independent commission. Go read the law that sets it up – It is directly under the office of the president, and that’s why the president doesn’t need any input to appoint the Chairman of the Commission. As a lawyer, I want to believe you know these things, but you just want to misinform your followers. That’s why I know you’re a morally bankrupt human being. No wonder you went in the back to take grant money you obtained with the death of a comrade. Now I believe you are immoral and will do such a thing on purpose.”
Ola $MON (@Ola22553990) opines: “They are ‘Aja Inu Iwe ‘”. Mere Paper Dogs. They have lost credibility and are completely shameless. If you can’t stay away from partisan politics and carry out your duty without fear, you are a waste of taxpayers’ funds.”
TernaEdewor159 (@Jamalcapable5) said: “C’est fini indeed. Thank you for always calling it out. Institutions that take direct presidential instructions on operational matters have lost their credibility.”
Chidimma Ijeuwa2022 (@ijeuwa2022), speaking his mind, said: “Tinubu has messed up every institution in Nigeria from the judiciary to electoral body to EFCC to the police and to the military and the DSS. HABA Tinubu. Even to governors.”
DooshimaDiri66 (@DaraTheory) said: “Exactly this. @sowore When the President can just order EFCC to reverse a court process, independence is only on paper. Well said, @sowore.:
Akogun (@Omo_Adesawe)
If EFCC and our court of law are independent organization, we will have more politicians in prison today than those free politicians
Peace4Progress (@Peace4Progress)
In another development, Nigerians are calling @sowore to allow @officialABAT to concentrate on the job we gave him to do while preparing to meet all other eligible candidates in the 2027 general elections. That’s how we choose our leaders. Social media is not a polling unit.
TernaNwosu169 (@NaijaDripCheck)
C’est fini is the perfect summary. Independence that can be switched off by a presidential directive is not independence. Strong post.
EkaetteUmeh161 (@Rek_pant)
Spot on analysis. Directing the agency to vacate a court order just days before an election raises serious questions. Keep pushing, Sowore.

There can never be one Nigeria; that’s an illusion. Nigeria will be great if it is regionalised (restructuring). Everything is just a joke.

The worst government ever in the history of Nigeria, there’s no sane country in this civilisation world that such leaders with questionable character’s can be helm of affairs of over 200 millions, they have undermined all institutions with their deep rooted corruption, it’s a shame.
babalola olanrewaju (@babalolaol68624)
It’s a big shame that the president allowed this freezing of Osun state Account to happen under his watch as president. Must every state be APC. Let other political party breath.
elufisan oluwatobi (@ElufisanO)
Independent or Democracy is not for Africa, I have been saying it, we are just happy we are not under white slavery, but the leader we have still treat us worst than the white…Efcc don’t work on the government, only on the massive, citizen is obligated to be poor, is what they mean…
Koke Obasi (@KokeObasi27556)
EFCC is always acted on a script written by the president and handled over to them to act so they are being controlled.
Ekanem Godswill (@EkanemGodswill2)
Just that some oloriburku will be here supporting rubbish. Of what right do @officialEFCC has to freeze a whole state account? But I see some people that don’t want the best for this country commenting rubbish. May God wrath visit you hypocrites. Enikure.
M.A.M.A.T.E.E.0.0.1 (@mamatii001)
When EFCC froze Osun government account, u never know that the organization is acting independently. U went for president 🗣️ but now that president caution EFCC not to put his government in trouble, u remember EFCC is independent. E ni lakaye
EjiroDiri204 (@Bigdaddyo278)
This is the kind of truth-telling Nigeria needs. EFCC’s independence exists only when it is convenient. Appreciate you speaking up.
Lucifer (@Lordluciferr1)
@officialEFCC you are a failed commission. You ignored the likes of Yahaya Bello, Wike, Akpabio and Bola Tinubu cases to fight innocent man simply because he is not a member of FAILED APC. You all in the commission are fools.
Dauda Jimoh Fatai (@dabosglobal)
All agency of Government appointed by the President will naturally click with to their appointor’s order until the constitution is amended. The Head of Important Government institution should also be voted for not appointed.
Chima Okafor (@AfroGospelMix)
If Peter Obi dey there, EFCC for still be independent. Not personal property. Deep down we know.
