Ten Dead, Ten Injured in Separate Road Crashes on Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway

-

The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed two separate but tragic fatal accidents that claimed ten lives and left ten others hospitalised on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, along the Ozalla/4-Corner axis of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.

The first crash occurred around 9 a.m. on the Enugu inbound lane. A Howo truck, marked Visco Investment Global and loaded with bags of cement en route Abuja from Aba, Abia State, collided with a Toyota Corolla that was attempting to overtake another truck. A Foton bus and a Daihatsu Hijet mini bus, both driving against traffic, were also involved in the collision.

The impact caused the truck and the Toyota Corolla to burst into flames, killing all five occupants of the car. A passenger in the mini bus was also confirmed dead by medical personnel at the scene.

In a separate incident around 3 p.m. on the same road, a Sino truck belonging to Global Investment and loaded with cement, while driving one-way from Garriki Enugu to Nenwe in Aninri LGA, rammed into a tricycle. Four occupants of the tricycle were rushed to the hospital but later confirmed dead.

Police said ten other people sustained varying degrees of injuries in both accidents and are currently receiving treatment.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and sympathized with the bereaved families. He has directed the State Motor Traffic Department to launch a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crashes.

While describing the incidents as avoidable, the CP warned motorists against recklessness, especially during the “Ember Months” when traffic is heavier and accidents are more frequent. He urged drivers to obey traffic regulations, prioritize safety, and remember that “no journey is worth the loss of lives.”
