Tinubu Appoints Tunji Disu as Acting IGP Following Egbetokun’s Resignation

-

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and immediately appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu to lead the force in an acting capacity.

The announcement, released by the Presidency, sighted by Securitynewsalrt.com, marks a sudden transition for the Nigeria Police Force. Mr Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was originally slated to serve until 2027 under the amended provisions of the Police Act.

The outgoing IGP cited “pressing family considerations” as the primary reason for his departure. Despite the early exit, President Tinubu lauded Egbetokun’s lengthy career and his contributions to the nation’s safety.

“The President expressed his profound appreciation for Mr Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service,” said Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. “He acknowledged his dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening the internal security architecture during his tenure.”

To fill the vacuum during a period of heightened security concerns, the President has tapped AIG Tunji Disu to take the reins effective immediately. Disu, known for his operational depth and previous leadership roles, is expected to provide steady and focused direction for the Force.

The Presidency expressed high expectations for the new acting chief, noting that the President is confident in Disu’s demonstrated leadership capacity. This appointment aligns with the administration’s broader goal of maintaining a police force that is professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.

While the acting appointment is effective immediately, the transition must still clear several legal hurdles outlined in the Police Act 2020. President Tinubu is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider Disu for the substantive role. Following this council meeting, the President will transmit the name to the Senate for official confirmation.

President Tinubu reiterated that his administration remains unwavering in its commitment to enhancing national security and strengthening institutional capacity across the federation.
