Tribute to Solomon Arase, Complete Gentleman and an Excellent Professional Police Officer

-

By Dr. Otive Igbuzor
I received with deep shock and sadness the news of the passing of Solomon Arase, former Inspector General of Police, who left us on 31st August, 2025, at the age of 69.

I had the privilege of interacting closely with Solomon Arase during my tenure as Commissioner at the Police Service Commission from 2008 to 201,3, representing civil society. During those years, I saw firsthand his professionalism, humility, and commitment to building a police force that would serve Nigerians with dignity and integrity.
He stood out as a complete gentleman and an excellent professional police officer who understood the delicate balance between enforcing the law and respecting the rights of citizens.
Afterwards when he became the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase graciously invited me to serve on the board of the Police Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO). This was another opportunity to appreciate his visionary leadership, collaborative spirit, and strong belief that the welfare of officers was central to improving policing in Nigeria.
Arase distinguished himself not only within the police institution but also in the way he worked with civil society. He opened doors of dialogue, built bridges of trust, and engaged with diverse stakeholders in the pursuit of peace and national development. He understood that policing was not just about force, but intelligence gathering and partnership with the people.
His passing is a huge loss to Nigeria. He will be sorely missed by committed Nigerians who yearn for peace, justice, and development in our country. Yet, we are comforted by the legacy of service, integrity, and bridge-building that he leaves behind.
On behalf of my family, colleagues, and friends, I extend heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, the Nigeria Police Force, and all who mourn him. May the Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest and comfort those he has left behind.
Adieu Solomon Arase – a true gentleman, a reformer, and a patriot.
