Troops of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, operating under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have neutralised scores of bandits during a fierce firefight at the camp of notorious bandit leader, Gwaska Dan Karmi, in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army/Sector 2 Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the successful operation followed credible intelligence indicating that over 100 bandits had converged at the camp to coordinate large-scale attacks on local communities and military supply routes.
He said the operation, which took place on January 31, 2026, was preceded by days of intensive surveillance. Ground troops, supported by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), intercepted the bandits at the identified location, leading to a prolonged and intense gun battle.
Lt. Col. Osoba explained that during the encounter, the terrorists attempted to flank and encircle the advancing troops. However, they were overwhelmed by the superior firepower and tactical coordination of the security forces. While many of the bandits were eliminated, several others escaped with gunshot wounds. The bandits’ camp was subsequently set ablaze before the troops withdrew.
He added that the NAF component is currently conducting interdiction missions to track and neutralise fleeing remnants, while ground forces continue to dominate the area to prevent any regrouping by the criminals.
The Army spokesman, however, noted with regret that some gallant soldiers paid the supreme price during the encounter. He also disclosed that one combat enabler vehicle was hit by an enemy Rocket Propelled Grenade, causing it to catch fire.
Lt. Col. Osoba stated that the Nigerian Army honours the sacrifice of its fallen personnel and remains resolute in its determination to sustain the fight against banditry. He assured that combat efficiency remains high as troops continue to dismantle bandit networks and disrupt their supply chains across the region.
