In a serious disciplinary sweep, the Senate of the University of Abuja (recently renamed Yakubu Gowon University) has approved the expulsion of 28 students and the formal withdrawal of certificates from 15 graduates.
Securitynewsalert.com learned that the decision follows a rigorous review of student conduct and academic integrity, marking one of the institution’s most significant disciplinary actions in recent years.
According to an official statement released by Dr Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of the Information Directorate, the resolution was reached during the Senate’s 191st Regular Meeting.
The council acted on specific recommendations provided by the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).
The offences leading to these severe penalties range from criminal activities to academic fraud. The university identified a wide array of infractions, including threats to life, physical assault, examination malpractice, and conspiracy.
Other serious charges involved burglary, theft, cult-related activities, and the possession or use of hard drugs. Additionally, several students were sanctioned for the falsification of ‘O’ Level results and a blatant failure to appear before the disciplinary committee after repeated invitations.
In a rare move, the University also targeted former students. The Senate approved the withdrawal of certificates for 15 individuals who failed to honour invitations by the SDC during investigations into their past conduct.
However, the investigations were not entirely punitive. The statement noted that nine students were exonerated after being cleared of wrongdoing, while 33 others received formal warnings for lesser infractions such as fighting and hostel racketeering.
The Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of the Senate, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, emphasised that the university would not waver in its pursuit of order.
“The University remains committed to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment,” Professor Fawehinmi stated. “We will continue to uphold discipline and enforce our rules and regulations without compromise.”
