Why Ogun Police Arrested TikToker, Mirabel, Amid Rape Claims

-

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a TikTok creator, identified as Mirabel (@mirab351), after an intensive investigation reportedly revealed that her viral allegations of sexual assault were fabricated.

Securitynewsalert.com can now report that what began as a social media outcry for justice has shifted into a legal case involving charges of providing false information and perverting the course of justice.

The case first gained national traction earlier this week when Mirabel posted a series of emotional videos claiming she had been raped and assaulted with a blade by an unidentified man.

The graphic nature of her claims, coupled with images suggesting physical injury, sparked widespread outrage across Nigerian social media.

Public pressure mounted quickly, prompting the Commissioner of Police to order an immediate and high-priority investigation. Initially, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the victim was escorted to a medical facility for urgent attention, signalling that the authorities were treating the matter with the gravity typically reserved for violent felonies.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of increasing “digital justice” in Nigeria, where victims often turn to platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) to bypass perceived bureaucratic delays in the legal system.

In recent months, several high-profile cases of gender-based violence have been successfully prosecuted following social media pressure. However, this environment has also seen a rise in “clout-chasing” allegations, where creators stage dramatic events to boost engagement or solicit financial support through “Save Me” funds and crowdfunding links.

As the investigation moved from the Ibafo Division to the Ogijo jurisdiction, the narrative began to collapse under professional scrutiny. According to police sources, several key factors led to the TikToker’s detention.

Neighbours provided testimony stating they heard no screams for help and observed no signs of forced entry or a struggle at the residence during the timeframe of the alleged attack.

Furthermore, a forensic analysis of phone records and text messages reportedly failed to corroborate the timeline she presented to the public.

Authorities also noted that despite offers from both the police and various NGOs specialising in sexual assault support, Mirabel allegedly refused to undergo comprehensive medical and forensic examinations.

These inconsistencies, paired with conflicting official statements, eventually led to her arrest for wasting police resources.

The fallout from the arrest has been swift and polarising. Mirabel’s TikTok account has since been set to private, and several videos related to the incident have been deleted.

Reports indicate that a segment of the public, including donors who sent money to her following the viral posts, is now demanding refunds and calling for her prosecution to serve as a deterrent.

“False allegations significantly undermine the plight of real survivors and exhaust limited investigative resources,” a police spokesperson emphasised. “Wasting police resources and attempting to pervert the course of justice will be treated with the utmost seriousness to protect the integrity of future investigations.”

Securitynewsalert.com heard that investigations are ongoing as police look into whether any third parties assisted in the fabrication of the story.

The Ogun State Police Command reiterated its commitment to justice but warned that those using social media to spread misinformation or staged crimes will face the full weight of the law.
