Police Service Commission Promotes Over 4,800 Officers, Including DSP, SP Specialists

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the promotion of thousands of officers following a nationwide Board Interview for serving Inspectors.

In a sweeping move to bolster leadership within the Nigerian Police Force, a total of 4,741 Inspectors were elevated — 4,708 now serve as unconfirmed Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP), while 33 earned promotions to the rank of Senior Inspector.

In addition to the Inspectors, the PSC approved:

  • Promotion of 38 Specialist Deputy Superintendents of Police to Superintendents
  • Promotion of 29 Specialist Superintendents to Chief Superintendents

These decisions were finalised during the Commission’s Plenary Meeting in Abuja, which concluded on Monday, July 21, 2025. Earlier in the session, the Commission ratified:

  • Promotion of 12 Commissioners of Police to Assistant Inspectors General of Police
  • 16 Deputy Commissioners promoted to substantive Commissioners
  • 28 Assistant Commissioners promoted to Deputy Commissioners

The meeting was presided over by the PSC Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu (mni). Members in attendance included:

  • Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, retired Supreme Court Justice (Judiciary representative)
  • DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd), fdc (Police representative)
  • Hon. Justice Christine Ladi Dabup, retired State High Court Justice
  • Abdulfatah Mohammed
  • Chief Onyemuche Nnamani (Secretary to the Commission)

Among the newly promoted Inspectors are:

  • Rabiu Ibrahim
  • Izang Nyam
  • Nannim James
  • Chinelo Obinuku
  • Bariminas Auyatiya
  • Sabi’u Umar

    • Others include Lawan Haruna, Opurum Patrick, Agbo James, and Georgewill Onwubiko.

DIG Argungu urged the newly promoted officers to embody unwavering patriotism, commitment, and compassion in their daily service. He emphasised the importance of fostering trust with the public, describing police officers as “the friend next door.”

He reassured that the Commission remains dedicated to improving welfare and working conditions for all personnel under its purview.
