The Edo State Government has addressed public concerns following remarks made by Governor Monday Okpebholo in response to Mr. Peter Obi’s recent visit to the state, stating categorically that no threats were issued.
In a statement issued by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, officials emphasized that the Governor’s comments had been widely misinterpreted. Rather than targeting Mr. Obi, the Governor was underscoring the importance of security clearance for politically exposed individuals visiting the state.
As the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, Governor Okpebholo carries the constitutional responsibility to protect residents and visitors. He stressed that high-profile visits should be coordinated through the proper channels to ensure public safety and prevent security lapses.
The clarification comes amid growing concerns over attacks on religious leaders. Edo State has faced several tragic incidents, including the abduction and killing of clergy. The Governor called for caution, particularly regarding public donations to religious institutions, noting that such acts—if not coordinated securely—could inadvertently increase vulnerability.
Referencing Matthew 6:2–4, the Governor appealed for discretion in charitable giving, citing both security concerns and moral teachings. “Giving is best done in private,” the Governor said, alluding to Jesus’s call for humility and caution.
The statement rebuffed attempts by political actors to capitalize on the controversy for gain, reminding the public that Governor Okpebholo’s position contrasts with historic political tensions—such as the detention of Nasir El-Rufai by Peter Obi during his tenure as Governor of Anambra.
Governor Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s dedication to making Edo State safe and welcoming for all Nigerians. His call for adherence to protocol, officials said, reflects sound governance—not political hostility.
The Edo State Government affirmed that it remains open to receiving all well-meaning Nigerians, provided appropriate security procedures are respected.
