Imo State Must End Its Silent Suffering

-

By Okechukwu Nwanguma
The anguish of Mr. Anayo Vigilus Njoku is a tragedy that speaks volumes about the continued breakdown of law and order in Imo State, Nigeria.

As he recounts the brutal destruction of his family home in Umualumaku, Ehime-Mbano, his words are filled with disbelief: “Why was my home targeted? What crime have I committed to deserve this fate?”
Witnesses reported that soldiers, whose identities remain unclear, looted Mr. Njoku’s home and set it ablaze. This was not an isolated act of violence, nor was it some accidental lapse in judgment. These soldiers, despite their military training, operated with impunity, violating human rights, and disregarding their mandate to protect citizens. They chased away family members at gunpoint, looted personal belongings, and left an innocent family homeless. Mr. Njoku, a law-abiding citizen, has devoted over three decades of his life to his profession, raised five children, and saved to build his home in his ancestral village. And now, in a single day, his life’s work has been reduced to ashes.
This is a profound violation of his constitutional rights to shelter, dignity, and property. It raises critical questions: Why are communities like Umualumaku, and many others in Imo State, vulnerable to such brutality? Why has the Imo State Government remained largely aloof, allowing a criminal siege to continue unchecked?
It is not enough for the state to claim ignorance or offer platitudes. The governor must step up and confront the criminal networks that continue to terrorize communities. These networks are composed of both local criminals and criminally empowered military personnel who have seemingly learned to exploit the prevailing insecurity for personal gain.
What is even more troubling is that the Imo State Government has yet to demonstrate the necessary urgency in addressing the systemic insecurity that plagues communities like Arondizuogu, Ehime-Mbano, and beyond. The pattern is clear: widespread violence, impunity, and inaction. The police, overwhelmed by their challenges, are often powerless in the face of these increasingly sophisticated attacks. As we have seen in Arondizuogu, the constant threats of kidnapping, killings, and lawlessness are now a daily reality for its citizens. If the government does not intervene immediately, these once-thriving communities could become ghost towns—abandoned by their citizens, and ignored by the government.
We must ask: If the Nigerian Army is responsible for attacks like this, how can we expect the citizens to trust them with their security? How can the people of Imo State be safe when they are under siege, not only from criminals but also from those who should be safeguarding them?
It is time for the Imo State Government to take a stand and ensure that Mr. Njoku’s case is not one of many ignored injustices. It is time for the government to wake up and end the criminal siege on the lives of innocent citizens.
Mr. Njoku, like many others before him, has done no wrong but simply sought to live in peace, contribute to his community, and invest in his future. Yet, he has had his life torn apart by an act of mindless violence. He deserves justice, and so do the many other victims across Imo State.
We call on all relevant authorities to investigate the destruction, looting, and human rights violations in Umualumaku and Arondizuogu, to bring the perpetrators to justice, and to restore law and order to these vulnerable communities.
The Nigerian Army Headquarters must identify and punish the soldiers involved in the attack on Mr. Njoku’s home.
The Imo State Government must urgently intervene to provide relief and address the root causes of the violence in its state.
The Nigerian Police Force must be empowered to act quickly, efficiently, and justly to ensure the protection of law-abiding citizens.
Communities cannot thrive under the constant threat of violence. If Mr. Njoku’s story is to mean anything, it must be the beginning of accountability, a turning point where Imo State and Nigeria stop tolerating impunity, violence, and neglect.
Let the people of Arondizuogu and Umualumaku, as well as the victims of similar attacks, feel safe once again. Let justice be done and let the rule of law prevail in Imo State.
