Army Plunges into Mourning as IED Explosion Kills Nine Nigerian Soldiers in Borno

-

At least nine Nigerian soldiers have been confirmed dead following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack by Boko Haram near Gubio in Borno State, security sources said.

The soldiers were travelling from Maiduguri when they stopped at a military camp on Saturday, with plans to continue their journey the following day. Reports indicated that the explosion was caused by planted explosives, not a gunman’s ambush.

Eight of the soldiers reportedly died on Sunday after sustaining severe injuries from the blast, while another soldier succumbed on Monday morning.

The affected troops were attached to the 145 Battalion, Damasak, under the 5 Brigade of the Nigerian Army.

Video footage shared by Sahara Reporters showed the aftermath of the explosion, highlighting the destruction at the scene.

The incident marks another deadly attack on military personnel in Nigeria’s North-East, where Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have continued to target troops using IEDs along patrol and supply routes.
