The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Kwara State, Nigeria, which reportedly left scores of people dead.

In a statement issued by his office, Guterres extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the government and people of Nigeria.

“The Secretary-General expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the Nigerian people and government,” the statement said. He also conveyed his wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured during the attack.

Reaffirming the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Nigeria, Guterres emphasised the organisation’s solidarity with the country in its fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

“He underscores the United Nations’ unwavering support and solidarity with Nigeria in its ongoing battle against terrorism and violent extremism,” the statement added.

The UN chief further stressed the importance of ensuring justice for the victims, calling for those responsible for the attack to be held accountable.

Guterres also noted that United Nations officials have consistently pledged support to strengthen counter-terrorism efforts across West Africa, as part of broader efforts to combat the growing threat of extremism in the region.
