Delta CP Hosts Strategic Security Conference, Warns Vigilantes Against Illegal Detention, Firearm Use

-

On February 11, 2026, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Aina Adesola, convened a strategic security conference in Asaba with Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, Tactical Commanders, and recognised security stakeholders across the state.

The meeting brought together representatives of Man O War, Anti-Cult Units, the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service, Tropical Human Rights, Anioma Security Watch, and various vigilante groups operating within Delta State.

Its purpose was to review the prevailing security situation, strengthen operational coordination, and reinforce collaboration between the Police and community-based security organisations.
In his address, CP Adesola expressed appreciation to vigilante members and community volunteers for their role in grassroots intelligence gathering and community safety. He underscored that the authority to carry firearms rests solely with the Nigeria Police Force, stressing that vigilante groups cannot independently bear arms without Police authorisation and supervision.

He further directed that all security activities, including patrols and suspect handling, must be coordinated with Divisional Police Officers to ensure legality and accountability.

The Commissioner issued a firm warning against illegal detention by vigilante groups, stating that suspects apprehended must be handed over immediately to the nearest Police Division.

He also raised concerns about membership integrity, cautioning that individuals affiliated with confraternities or criminal associations cannot legitimately claim to fight crime. “The devil cannot fight the devil,” he remarked, urging vigilante members to renounce unlawful associations if they genuinely intend to support lawful security efforts.

CP Adesola called for unity among vigilante and community security groups, noting that rivalry and fragmentation weaken collective outcomes. He emphasised the importance of intelligence gathering and timely information sharing with the Police as critical tools in crime prevention.

The conference concluded with renewed commitments to strengthen synergy between Police formations, tactical units, and community security stakeholders, while upholding professionalism, discipline, and strict adherence to the law.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Delta State, assuring residents of sustained, coordinated, and lawful security operations aimed at maintaining peace and public order.
