Lagos Police’s Strategic Move Against Suspected Cultists yields Results

-

The Lagos State Police Command said it has arrested suspected cultists and recovered guns from them.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Tijani Fatai, stated this on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the achievements of the command.

According to Fatai, in a coordinated crackdown on violent crime, operatives under his instruction arrested two high-profile suspects, including a notorious individual long-evading the authorities and a confessed cult member.

He disclosed that the first breakthrough occurred in the Amukoko area following “credible intelligence” regarding a suspect who had been on the Command’s wanted list for some time.

Acting on a direct order, officers descended on the Canal area of Campus Street, where they successfully apprehended 43-year-old Jamiu Yahaya, better known by his street name, “Elesin.”

Fatai further said: “Operatives of the command were immediately deployed on my directive, leading to the arrest of one Jamiu Yahaya.”

The CP also revealed that during interrogation, the suspect admitted to possessing a firearm.

“A subsequent search of his residence yielded a locally made pistol, two live cartridges, an empty shell of K2 ammunition, and an assortment of items suspected to be charms. The case remains under active investigation as police look into his potential links to broader criminal networks,” said Fatai.

In a separate operation conducted late in the evening on April 1, 2026, police moved against a suspected armed cultist in the Ajegunle district.

At approximately 11:06 PM, tactical units acted on a tip-off concerning a young man reportedly stockpiling dangerous weapons.

The operation led to the arrest of 23-year-old Sunday Daniel. During a search of his home, officers recovered another locally made pistol.

According to Fatai, “The suspect confessed to membership of the Aiye Confraternity and has provided useful information to aid ongoing efforts to arrest other fleeing members.”

“The Command has reaffirmed its commitment to flushing out violent elements from the state, noting that these arrests are part of a broader strategy to dismantle local gangs and organized cult groups,” the CP said.

Both suspects are currently in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
