The Nigerian Army has debunked a resurging social media report falsely claiming the recent killing of retired Major General Hassan Ahmed and the abduction of his wife near Abuja, describing it as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
In a statement released Tuesday, an Army spokesman confirmed that the incident in question dates back to 15 July 2021, when Major General Hassan Ahmed was killed along the Abuja–Lokoja Road, nearly five years ago. Security agencies investigated the matter at the time, arrested the perpetrators, and saw the case through to justice.
“This report is completely false and is a deliberate attempt to mislead the public,” the Army said, adding that it condemns “in the strongest terms the irresponsible recycling of this five-year-old incident by mischief makers.”
The Army warned that such actions are aimed at creating unnecessary public panic and undermining confidence in Nigeria’s security institutions.
Members of the public have been advised to disregard the circulating report and to avoid sharing unverified or outdated information on social media.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and maintaining peace and security across the country.
