Enugu Police Dismisses Alleged Planned Attack on UNN, Launch Probe Into False Security Alert

-

The Enugu State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a social media report alleging a planned infiltration, kidnapping, and attack on the campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and its surrounding communities.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said the report was deliberately crafted to create fear and panic among students, staff, and residents of the university community.

According to the Command, intelligence gathering and threat assessments conducted by security operatives have not revealed any credible information indicating a planned attack or security threat against the institution.

The police further stated that adequate security measures have been put in place in collaboration with the university management and other security agencies to safeguard lives and property within and around the campus.

“The report is false, misleading, and deliberately intended to incite fear and panic within the university community and surrounding areas,” the statement said.

The Command noted that individuals behind the report are part of a criminal syndicate that operates under the guise of “Anonymous” and other social media aliases. It is alleged that the group has repeatedly circulated similar alarmist claims over the years to create public panic and undermine peace and security in the state.

The police disclosed that intelligence-led investigations are ongoing to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible for originating and disseminating the false information, as well as their collaborators.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reassured the university management, staff, students, and residents of the institution’s host communities that security agencies remain vigilant and committed to maintaining peace and order.

He emphasised that sufficient security arrangements remain in place and pledged that the Command would continue to strengthen its security architecture to prevent crime and respond swiftly to any threat to public safety.

CP Giwa urged members of the public to disregard the report and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of causing unnecessary panic, warning that such actions could attract legal consequences.

He also encouraged residents to remain security conscious and promptly report suspicious persons, movements, or activities to the nearest police station or through established security channels. #Securitynewsalert.com
