Police Hold Stakeholders’ Meeting Ahead of Liquor Licensing Law Enforcement in Delta State

-

The Delta State Police Command has convened a stakeholders’ meeting to sensitise hoteliers, liquor dealers, and other affected operators ahead of the enforcement of the state’s Liquor (Licensing) Law.

The meeting, convened by the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, mandating police commands nationwide to enforce laws regulating the sale and consumption of liquor. Its purpose was to clarify the objectives of the upcoming exercise and encourage compliance among relevant stakeholders before enforcement begins.

Addressing attendees, CP Oyeniyi said the initiative was not designed to disrupt legitimate businesses or burden operators, but to uphold existing law in the interest of public safety. He explained that proper regulation would allow authorities to monitor liquor-selling premises more effectively and prevent such locations from being exploited for criminal activity. He added that the exercise forms part of broader efforts to prevent and control crime, stressing that a well-regulated environment would foster a safer, more peaceful society for Delta State residents.

A representative of the Delta State Ministry of Justice provided legal context on the licensing law and called for continued collaboration among stakeholders to address issues related to alcohol sales and consumption in the state.

The Executive Director (Operations) of the Delta State Internal Revenue Service, Prof. Frank Onyisi Nwugo, noted that public awareness of the legal requirements remains low and called for expanded sensitisation efforts across all local government areas to widen understanding and coverage.

A representative of the Secretary to the State Government also urged hoteliers, liquor dealers, and other affected operators to acquaint themselves with the law’s provisions and ensure full compliance.

The meeting drew participation from the Delta State Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Lands, the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, the Delta State Internal Revenue Service, and local government councils across the state, alongside the Chairman of the Nigeria Hoteliers Association, Delta State chapter, hoteliers, and wine and liquor dealers.

The Police Command has since called on operators of affected establishments to cooperate with authorities and comply with the law, describing the exercise as one aimed at lawful regulation, crime prevention, and the overall safety and security of Delta State residents.
