Nigerian troops repelled an ambush by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State on Sunday, going on to destroy several makeshift terrorist camps and recover weapons, ammunition and other combat equipment, the military said.
According to a statement issued by the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, troops of the 27 Task Force Brigade, operating under Sector 2, were conducting a routine patrol along the Buni Gari–Buratai axis in Biu Local Government Area when they came under attack.
“Troops of 27 Task Force Brigade, operating under Sector 2, Operation HADIN KAI, have on 7 September 2026 successfully foiled an ambush by suspected Boko Haram terrorists,” the statement read, adding that the soldiers “responded decisively, forcing the terrorists to withdraw from the area in disarray.”
The military said reinforcements were swiftly deployed to the scene, allowing troops to clear the ambush site and carry out further operations in the surrounding area.
During the follow-up sweep, soldiers uncovered and dismantled several camps believed to have served as temporary hideouts and staging points for the insurgents. Items recovered from the sites included a motorcycle, bicycles, a rifle magazine, assorted ammunition, and rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) bombs.
The military confirmed there were no casualties among its troops, though it acknowledged that some military vehicles were damaged in the exchange. “Notwithstanding the damage, the troops remained operational and successfully completed the mission,” the statement noted.
Officials described the operation as evidence of the continued determination of troops in the theatre to counter terrorist activity. “The operation underscores the resolve and fighting spirit of troops of Operation HADIN KAI to deny terrorist elements freedom of action, disrupt their activities and protect communities across the theatre,” the statement said.
The military further noted that while the general security situation in the area “remains calm but unpredictable,” troops would continue mounting aggressive patrols and coordinated operations to protect residents.
It also renewed its call on members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies, stressing that such information “remains critical to ongoing efforts to detect, disrupt and neutralise terrorist activities within the theatre.”
