A 55-year-old motorist has escaped unhurt after a moving train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos.
The collision involved a train travelling towards Agege and a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said its operatives, working with security personnel, responded swiftly to the incident and rescued the driver without any reported injury.
According to the authority, the collision left the Honda car extensively damaged and virtually written off. However, no casualty was recorded at the scene.
LASTMA operatives and security personnel subsequently removed the wrecked vehicle from the railway track, allowing the train to resume its journey towards Agege.
Despite the clearance of the railway line, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD axis, disrupting the smooth movement of vehicles along the affected corridor.
The damaged vehicle was later handed over to security personnel for further investigation into the cause of the collision.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the authority’s operatives and the security personnel for their prompt response and coordinated handling of the incident.
Bakare-Oki said effective collaboration among emergency responders, situational awareness and timely intervention were essential to reducing the consequences of transportation incidents, particularly those involving railway operations and adjoining roads.
He also urged motorists to strictly observe railway safety regulations and exercise caution when approaching railway crossings and designated train corridors.
The LASTMA general manager warned motorists against attempting to cross railway tracks when a train was approaching or already in motion, noting that disregard for safety regulations could result in devastating consequences.
The authority appealed to motorists and other road users to remain vigilant and comply with traffic and railway safety rules, stressing that responsible driving and caution were critical to preventing avoidable collisions.
