The Enugu State Police Command has secured the conviction of a phone snatcher, who was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for conspiracy and five years for robbery, with both terms to run concurrently. In a separate case, another suspect was arraigned and remanded in custody for allegedly stealing alcoholic beverages from a popular supermarket in the state capital.
The two cases, handled by the New Haven Police Division, were cited by the Command as evidence of its commitment to professional policing, thorough investigations and diligent prosecution.
According to police, 34-year-old Ejike Nnam, who lives in an uncompleted building at Nkpokiti, Enugu, allegedly snatched an iPhone XR valued at ₦240,000 from a woman along Bisalla Road at about 8 p.m. on October 8, 2026. He is said to have acted with an accomplice, who remains at large.
Nnam was promptly arrested and arraigned the following day before the Enugu North Magistrate Court, where he pleaded guilty and was convicted. He received three years’ imprisonment for conspiracy and five years for robbery, with the sentences running concurrently.
In the second case, 29-year-old Richard Chukwuma was arrested at about 6:50 p.m. on October 7, 2026, at a popular Enugu supermarket, whose name was withheld, on suspicion of stealing a bottle of Jameson Green Whisky valued at ₦30,150.
Police said that during interrogation, he reportedly confessed to having earlier stolen 15 bottles of the same whisky from the supermarket. He was arraigned on October 9, 2026, and remanded at the Enugu Correctional Centre.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the Chief Magistrate for the prompt dispensation of justice in the phone-snatching case. He called for the sustained and speedy conclusion of police cases in courts across the state, noting that timely adjudication strengthens public confidence in the justice system and supports effective crime prevention.
He also praised the New Haven Police Division and the prosecution team for their diligence, reaffirming the Command’s resolve to conduct thorough investigations and prosecute criminal cases in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the police.
