Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, received a delegation of media professionals from China’s state news agency, Xinhua, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The high-level meeting was convened to explore collaboration in news sharing and information exchange between the two institutions.
Xinhua News Agency, China’s official state news agency, operates a vast global network with an extensive presence across Africa. In Nigeria, the agency promotes China-Africa relations by disseminating news on economic development, culture, trade, and social progress, while collaborating with local media organisations to strengthen information exchange and mutual understanding.
The delegation was led by Mr. Gui Tao, Deputy President of Xinhua News Agency for Africa, who underscored the importance of accurate and balanced reporting in fostering international cooperation.
He expressed Xinhua’s readiness to work with the ICPC in projecting the Commission’s anti-corruption initiatives to a global audience, noting that corruption is a transnational challenge that demands cross-border media collaboration.
Welcoming the delegation, Dr. Aliyu described the proposed partnership as a timely opportunity to strengthen Nigeria-China relations and to support the fight against corruption, particularly illicit financial flows and the cross-border movement of proceeds of crime. He noted that the media play a critical role in shaping public perception and in mobilising citizens against corruption.
The ICPC Chairman called on Xinhua to support the Commission’s media and public communication efforts through technology transfer and professional training for staff of its Media and Public Communication Unit. Such capacity-building, he said, would improve news dissemination and enhance the global visibility of the Commission’s activities.
Mr. Gui Tao reaffirmed Xinhua’s commitment to providing technical support and training opportunities for ICPC media personnel, stating that the agency’s global platform could be leveraged to showcase Nigeria’s anti-corruption reforms and success stories. He emphasised that the partnership would be mutually beneficial and rooted in shared values of integrity and public accountability.
The partnership is widely expected to enhance the ICPC’s international profile, promote Nigeria’s anti-corruption agenda on the global stage, and strengthen the bonds of cooperation between Nigeria and China in the areas of media, governance, and the rule of law.
