The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of a 26-year-old man, Kehinde Asimiyu, who died after an altercation in the Olodo area of Ibadan. The incident also triggered unrest that police say nearly led to a breakdown of law and order.
According to a report received by police on November 1, 2026, Asimiyu was allegedly stabbed with a broken bottle by one Taiwo Babarinde at Olodo Garage following an argument between the two men. His family learned of the attack when an unidentified motorcycle rider went to their residence to inform them.
Police operatives and a patrol team promptly moved to the scene, while the victim was rushed to Academy Hospital, Texaco, Iwo Road, Ibadan, where a doctor on duty confirmed him dead. His body was deposited at Adejare Embalming Centre, and photographs were taken as part of preliminary investigations.
Two suspects were subsequently arrested: Babarinde, who is suspected of inflicting the fatal injury, and Ishola Semiu, who is suspected of involvement in the incident. Both are in police custody, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, Ibadan, for a comprehensive investigation.
Following the incident, however, unrest broke out at the Olodo Police Outpost, and reports emerged of threats by hoodlums. The Command responded by deploying additional operational assets, supported by personnel of the Nigerian Army, Amotekun Corps, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other local law enforcement components. Police say the deployment has restored normalcy, and a sustained security presence will remain in the area to prevent further disturbances.
Commissioner of Police CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga also directed the Area Commander, Moniya, to engage community stakeholders to address the situation and prevent a recurrence. The Area Commander on Tuesday met with representatives of the Local Council Development Area (LCDA), leaders of tricycle and motorcycle operators, and youth leaders. The meeting focused on identifying practical solutions, improving communication with security agencies and promoting peaceful coexistence.
The Command reassured residents of Olodo and its environs that adequate security measures are in place to protect lives and property. It warned individuals or groups seeking to foment trouble, incite violence or exploit the situation that such conduct would not be tolerated, adding that it would deal decisively with anyone threatening public peace.
The Commissioner urged residents to remain calm, shun violence and embrace dialogue in resolving disputes. He also encouraged community members to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and timely information.
