Activist Demands Professional Handling of Case as 4-Year-Old Tells Mom About Caretaker’s Violation

-

A concerned mother, residing in Iba, Lagos State, has dashed to the Iba Police Station after her four-year-old daughter disclosed that the caretaker of their public residence, where they reside, has a penchant for touching her in the wrong way.

According to her account, she had stepped outside with her children to calm her crying baby when her neighbour, identified as Oga Benjamin, approached.

The mother explained that Benjamin, who often acts as caretaker in the compound, was engaged in casual conversation with her when she noticed her 4‑year‑old daughter near him.

She stated, “I saw my daughter climb towards the fence where Benjamin was standing. Suddenly, I noticed his hand under her dress. I was shocked and confused. Later, when I questioned my daughter privately, she confirmed that Benjamin had touched her inappropriately on several occasions.”

The mother further revealed that upon inspection, she noticed physical signs of abuse. Distressed, she contacted her sister and eventually confronted Benjamin directly. The confrontation escalated, drawing the attention of neighbours and the landlord.

Following advice from relatives, the mother reported the matter to the Iba Police Station, where the suspect was taken into custody. Inspector John Franca, the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), instructed the mother to seek medical examination for her daughter.

However, according to Zeecfoundation, a child protection NGO monitoring the case, there were delays in the arrest process.

Programme Director Blessing Aderemi expressed concern, stating that the alleged perpetrator had not been properly detained as of 4:25 p.m.

She criticised the handling of the case, calling it “a slap in the face to the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.”

Child rights advocate Madam Kelechi Udobi, serving as case manager, has since joined the family to ensure proper follow‑up and support for the survivor. #Securitynewsalert.com
