Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned the killing of over 200 people in separate attacks on rural communities in Kwara and Katsina states, describing the incidents as among the deadliest in recent times.
In a statement released on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the rights organisation said gunmen attacked Woro and Nuku villages in Kwara State, where more than 170 people were reportedly killed. The attackers were also said to have razed homes and looted shops during the assault.
The group further disclosed that in Katsina State, 21 people were killed during an attack on Doma village in Tafoki ward, Faskari Local Government Area.
According to Amnesty International, villagers in the affected Kwara communities are still searching for missing persons and recovering bodies. The organisation alleged that many victims were killed at close range, while others died in fires set by the attackers. It also claimed that several people were abducted during the incidents.
Eyewitnesses quoted by the organisation said the gunmen operated for hours without resistance, allegedly rounding up young men and families before killing them. Amnesty International said the prolonged nature of the attacks pointed to serious security lapses.
The organisation also alleged that the attackers had sent threat letters and pamphlets to the affected communities weeks before carrying out the assaults.
Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to conduct an effective and impartial investigation into the attacks and strengthen security in vulnerable rural communities.
“The Nigerian authorities must effectively and impartially investigate these vicious attacks and do more to protect lives of all people,” the organisation said.
The group further urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritise protecting citizens and to ensure that victims’ families receive justice and compensation.
