Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the alleged extrajudicial killing of two men by its personnel in the Karmajiji community, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The human rights organisation, in a statement released on Wednesday, said the incident occurred on January 19, 2026, and described it as another example of what it termed reckless and unlawful use of firearms by security operatives.
According to Amnesty International, one of the victims, Musa Adamu, died a few hours after the shooting, while the second victim, Mallam Suleiman Salisu, reportedly succumbed to injuries on January 28 at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja.
The organisation urged the DSS to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that any personnel found culpable are brought to justice through a fair trial.
“This gross violation of human rights must not be swept under the carpet,” Amnesty International stated, stressing that security agencies are expected to protect citizens rather than expose them to harm.
Amnesty International further warned that repeated allegations of misconduct by security operatives could erode public trust and create fear within communities.
The organisation also referenced a previous incident on September 7, 2023, when a DSS operative allegedly shot and killed a fashion designer at the Garki International Market in Abuja during a dispute involving his girlfriend and the victim over delayed tailoring services.
Amnesty International expressed concern that security personnel sometimes exceed their official mandate by intervening in civil disputes, including contractual and business disagreements, with reports of torture and abuse in some cases.
