The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has approved a sweeping redeployment of senior officers across command, operational, and staff positions to bolster the Nigerian Army’s response to ongoing security challenges.
The strategic reorganisation aims to enhance operational efficiency, reinforce command structures, and align the military framework with the nation’s evolving security landscape.
Speaking on the objective of the reshuffle, the Army stated that the strategic adjustments were specifically targeted at crucial sectors.
“The postings focus on key theatres and strategic appointments to ensure experienced leadership is placed where it is most needed,” the Service noted, emphasising that the exercise forms “part of efforts to sustain a responsive leadership structure that enhances joint operations and addresses emerging threats.”
Among the top-level changes, Major General I.A. Ajose transitions from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Operations to assume leadership as Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK). He takes over from Major General A.E. Abubakar, who has been redeployed from OPHK to serve as Dean, Faculty of Operational Research at the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.
Several other principal appointments were announced at the senior level. Major General R.T. Utsaha assumes command of the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Garrison, Major General A.M. Umar takes over as Commandant of the Army War College Nigeria, and Major General U.M. Alkali moves to the Department of Civil-Military Affairs. Additionally, Major General G.S. Muhammed becomes Director-General of the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation, Major General J.E. Osifo serves as Chairman of the Military Pension Board, and Major General I.E. Ekpenyong takes on the role of Director of Engineering Services at the DHQ Department of Defence Logistics.
At the brigade and operational levels, Brigadier General M.S. Adamu has been appointed to pioneer command of the newly created 8 Brigade, while Brigadier General M.S. Sule takes over as Commander of the 27 Task Force Brigade.
Brigadier General A.A. Bello moves to the DHQ Department of Defence Operations, while Garrison Command roles have been filled by Brigadier General I. Sule at the 6 Division Garrison and Brigadier General E. Azenda at the 2 Division Garrison. Meanwhile, Brigadier General A.S. Bugaje assumes the post of Director of Administration at the Land Forces Simulation Centre.
Addressing the newly appointed commanders, Lieutenant General Shaibu charged the officers to lead by example and maintain a high standard of professional excellence in their new roles.
The COAS urged the commanders to “provide exemplary leadership, drive operational innovation, and remain committed to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting civil authorities.”
All appointments are expected to take effect immediately to ensure seamless operational continuity across all formations.
