The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, has undertaken a strategic security visit to Oghara in Ethiope West Local Government Area, where he met with the traditional ruler of the kingdom and held a security meeting with key stakeholders aimed at strengthening community policing and tackling crime.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Delta State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, the commissioner first paid a courtesy visit to the Ovie of Oghara Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Noble Oyibo Eshemitan (Orefe III), before engaging stakeholders in discussions on the security situation in the area.
During the palace visit, Oyeniyi commended the monarch for his leadership in promoting peace and harmonious coexistence within the kingdom. He noted that, based on his assessment, Oghara remained largely peaceful despite isolated cases of kidnapping and cult-related activities.
The police commissioner also reiterated the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on strengthening collaboration with traditional rulers, local government authorities and communities as a key strategy for effective policing. He described criminal elements as a common enemy and urged residents to sustain intelligence sharing and collective efforts to maintain peace.
In his response, the Ovie described the commissioner as a competent and purposeful leader and reaffirmed the kingdom’s commitment to supporting the police in protecting lives and property.
The stakeholders’ security meeting was attended by the Chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Area, Hon. (Pst.) Christian O. Onogba, youth leaders, Presidents-General of various communities, members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), representatives of the Arewa community and other stakeholders.
Participants identified drug abuse, cultism and kidnapping as major security concerns and pledged greater cooperation with security agencies through timely intelligence sharing, protection of informants and stronger collaboration among the police, judiciary, local government authorities and community leaders to ensure the effective prosecution of criminal suspects.
Oyeniyi assured residents that the Delta State Police Command would continue to strengthen intelligence-led policing and strategic partnerships with traditional institutions, local government councils and communities to improve public safety across the state.
The council chairman also reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to supporting the command’s efforts to ensure a safer and more secure Ethiope West, the statement added.
