The Delta State Police Command has demoted two officers found guilty of extortion after they were captured in a viral video receiving money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal inside a police station.
The officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, attached to the ‘C’ Division in Asaba, were tried in an orderly room proceeding over the incident, which occurred on January 13, 2026.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, upheld the findings of the disciplinary panel, which found both officers guilty of disobedience to lawful order, extortion and discreditable conduct, contrary to the provisions of the Police Act, 2020.
As part of the sanctions, Inspector Jeremiah was reduced in rank to Sergeant, while Corporal Ehirim was demoted to Constable.
The Commissioner reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s zero-tolerance policy on extortion and professional misconduct, stressing that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has prohibited the use of Point-of-Sale terminals and other electronic payment platforms in police stations and formations nationwide.
He warned that no police officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise, adding that any officer found violating the directive would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
Oyeniyi urged officers and personnel of the command to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and respect for citizens’ rights, noting that the disciplinary action should serve as a deterrent to others.
