The Delta State Police Command has recorded breakthroughs in its sustained crackdown on crime across the state, arresting a notorious drug dealer and a suspect conveying 400 rounds of live cartridges.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, on Sunday, October 19, 2025, the operations were carried out under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal arms movement and the circulation of illicit substances.
On October 16, 2025, around 12:00 p.m., operatives of ‘C’ Division, Asaba, led by CSP Ogbe Emmanuel, intercepted a Toyota Hiace Hummer bus with registration number NGK 16 XB during a stop-and-search operation at the Head Bridge, Asaba.
The driver, identified as Ozoemenam Sylvanus, reportedly appeared nervous during questioning, prompting a search of the vehicle. Officers subsequently discovered 400 live cartridges concealed within the bus.
According to police sources, the suspect initially claimed the parcels contained padlocks but was left speechless when the true contents were revealed. He was immediately arrested, and investigations are ongoing to trace the source and destination of the ammunition, believed to be bound for Edo State.
In a separate operation on October 10, 2025, operatives of the Orerokpe Division, acting on credible intelligence, arrested Onos Afokoghene, a 37-year-old suspected drug kingpin notorious for supplying hard drugs within Warri and its environs.
Led by CSP Paul Oboware, the operatives stormed a known drug spot in Jeddo Community, where the suspect and others were reportedly engaged in drug sales and consumption. Although several suspects fled on sighting the police, Afokoghene was apprehended after a brief chase.
A search of the scene led to the recovery of several illicit items, including: 3kg of Canadian Loud, 10kg of Indian hemp, 24 litres of soaked weed in dry gin (locally known as “monkey tail”), Several sachets of Tramadol of various milligrams and two POS machines suspected to be used for drug transactions.
The police say the suspect remains in custody while efforts are ongoing to dismantle his distribution network.
CP Abaniwonda reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents in the state. He urged the public to continue supporting the police by providing credible information that could help prevent and combat criminal activities.
“The safety of residents remains our utmost priority. We will continue to intensify operations to rid the state of crime and criminal elements,” the CP assured.
He also encouraged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements through the Command’s distress line: 08036684974.
