Delta Police Arrests Woman for Selling Two-Month-Old Baby, Rescues Trafficked Infant

-

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a woman for allegedly selling her two-month-old baby and staging a fake robbery to cover up the crime, leading to the rescue of the trafficked infant.

According to the Command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), a Superintendent of Police, Mr Bright Edafe, said that the incident was reported on December 15, 2025, at about 6:40 p.m., when one Rita Ughale of Kokori, Ethiope East Local Government Area, reported at the Ekpan Police Division that her baby had been snatched during a robbery while she was travelling in a tricycle.

Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ekpan Division, CSP Labe Joseph, immediately mobilised operatives and coordinated a swift search-and-rescue operation. However, during the investigation, police observed inconsistencies and suspicious behaviour in the woman’s account, which prompted further interrogation.

Police said the complainant later confessed that the robbery story was fabricated. She allegedly admitted that she had sold her two-month-old child to a couple identified as Osas Omijie, 39, and Judith Omijie, 30, for the sum of ₦1.5 million.

The suspects were subsequently arrested, while the infant was rescued and confirmed to be safe. All the suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue, with efforts intensified to track down and arrest other accomplices for prosecution.
