In a proactive bid to shield educational institutions from the rising wave of student abductions across the country, the Delta State Police Command has launched a strategic security offensive aimed at fortifying schools within the state.
On Wednesday, December 17, 2025, the Command hosted a high-level security summit in Asaba, bringing together 62 heads of public and private schools, teachers, and key education stakeholders. The meeting was convened under the directive of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda.
Representing the Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, led the discussions alongside ACP George Efeizomor, the Coordinator of the Safe School Initiative in Delta State.
The dialogue centred on practical defence strategies to prevent the security breaches seen in other parts of the Federation.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Command is pushing for a multi-layered approach to campus safety. The deliberations focused on the urgent need for fencing school premises and the installation of modern surveillance cameras to monitor school grounds.
Furthermore, the police advocated for the engagement of local vigilantes and improved collaboration between schools and security agencies. Beyond physical security, the meeting also addressed emerging concerns such as parental interference and the misuse of mobile phones during school hours.
The Police Command used the forum to announce that intelligence-led patrols and rapid response mechanisms have been significantly scaled up as the year draws to a close. Addressing participants, ACP George Efeizomor assured educators of sustained police support and urged school heads to maintain direct communication with their respective DPOs and Area Commanders.
Emergency control room numbers were also distributed to ensure prompt reporting and a high speed of intervention.
Reassuring the public, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda stated through his representative that the Command has activated specialised deployments across the state, with a specific focus on school zones throughout the remaining Ember Months.
While the Command maintained that Delta State remains relatively peaceful, officials emphasised that the safety of students and teachers is a collective responsibility. They called on parents and community stakeholders to continue supporting security efforts to safeguard facilities and staff.
