IGP Warns Against Jungle Justice, Vows Full Prosecution of Offenders

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Olatunji Disu, has issued a stern warning to the public against mob violence, declaring that anyone involved in lynching or killing a criminal suspect will be prosecuted under the law.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja, the IGP stressed that only the courts have the authority to determine guilt and impose punishment on suspects.

He called on citizens to hand over suspected criminals to police or other security agencies rather than take matters into their own hands.

Disu was unequivocal in his condemnation, describing so-called “jungle justice” as a criminal act rather than a form of justice.

He emphasised that Nigeria is governed by the rule of law, not mob rule, and that no individual, group, or community has the right to try, sentence, or execute another person.

Citing Sections 33, 34, and 36 of the 1999 Constitution, he noted that every Nigerian, including suspects, is guaranteed the right to life, dignity, and a fair hearing.

He underscored that the presumption of innocence applies until a court rules otherwise, not based on street accusations, mob sentiment, or viral videos.

The IGP pointed to a troubling pattern of innocent lives lost to unfounded suspicion, referencing cases involving students accused of phone theft, travellers mistaken for criminals, and individuals murdered over rumours of blasphemy or ritual killing.

He specifically recalled the killing of 16 travellers in Uromi, Edo State, in March 2025, calling it a case that should serve as a lasting warning.

He reiterated that rumours, shouted accusations, or circulating videos do not amount to evidence and cannot justify taking a life.

Disu made clear that legal responsibility for mob killings extends well beyond those who deliver a fatal blow.

According to the IGP, anyone who incites, plans, supports, or encourages a mob attack can be held criminally liable even without directly participating in the violence.

He added that individuals who cheer on attackers, film the incidents, circulate videos, help mobilise crowds, or obstruct security personnel attempting to intervene could all face criminal charges, including conspiracy to commit murder.

The IGP disclosed that he has instructed all Commissioners of Police across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to treat every mob killing as a homicide case, to be investigated using forensic and intelligence-led methods.

He said police would pursue not only ringleaders but all identifiable participants, using video footage, eyewitness accounts, and community intelligence.

Disu also cautioned police and other security officers against failing to intervene when mob violence unfolds.

He said any officer who looks away or neglects to act to protect a victim’s life would face disciplinary consequences, stressing that protecting lives is a core, non-negotiable duty of the uniform.
