The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Bemgha Paul Koughna, has visited a Forward Operating Base in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, as part of an operational assessment following renewed security threats linked to the Lakurawa terrorist group in the area.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Nigerian Army and Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba.
According to the statement, the visit was prompted by recent attacks on Ungushi communities by terrorists operating in the area.
The statement noted that the GOC has since adjusted the security architecture in the area to prevent further infiltration and strengthen protection for vulnerable communities along the Sokoto-Kebbi border.
During the visit, Major General Koughna met with community leaders and residents to assess the security situation firsthand and reassure them of the Army’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
He said troops remain fully deployed and highly alert to respond swiftly to emerging threats, stressing that terrorist elements would not be allowed to establish safe havens in the region.
The GOC urged residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities, assuring them that security forces are firmly on the ground.
He also appealed to community members to cooperate with troops by providing credible and timely information on suspicious movements and activities, noting that such support remains vital in detecting, disrupting, and dismantling terrorist networks before they can carry out attacks.
