Delta Police Establish Violent Complaint Response Unit, Redeploy Personnel

-

The Delta State Police Command has established a specialised Violent Complaint Response Unit (VCRU) as part of efforts to strengthen operational efficiency, discipline, and accountability across the state.

The development, announced in a statement on April 25, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, said the creation of the VCRU forms a key component of a broader reorganisation of the command’s operational structure.

“The VCRU is designed to handle violent and high-risk complaints, including threats to life, grievous assault, domestic violence, and other related offences requiring urgent police intervention,” Oyeniyi said.

He explained that the unit would serve as a rapid response and coordination platform, working closely with divisional formations and tactical teams to ensure prompt and professional handling of critical incidents.

As part of its take-off, selected personnel assigned to the unit underwent a three-day intensive retraining programme.

During the training, the Commissioner of Police charged the officers to uphold “the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights” in the discharge of their duties.

The officers also received lectures on key operational and legal issues, including sessions led by the officer in charge of the Legal Department on the use of force and compliance with extant laws. Additional training covered arms handling, musketry, and the lawful use of firearms, with emphasis on responsibility, restraint, and operational safety.

Oyeniyi noted that the reforms are aimed at deepening professional policing and restoring public confidence, stressing that “negligence, misconduct, or abuse of human rights will not be tolerated.”

He further directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and heads of tactical units to support the new unit and ensure that all referrals are treated with urgency and in line with established procedures.

The police boss assured residents of the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging the public to promptly report incidents of violence through official police channels.

He added that the command remains resolute in delivering efficient, responsive, and people-centred policing across the state. #Securitynewsalert.com
