Delta Police Records Breakthroughs Against Kidnapping, Gunrunning, Drug Trafficking — CP Aina Adesola

-

The Delta State Police Command has recorded significant operational successes against kidnapping, violent crimes, illegal arms trafficking and drug-related offences since the assumption of office of the 23rd Commissioner of Police, CP Aina Adesola.

Addressing journalists during a press briefing in Asaba, CP Adesola said the achievements were recorded through coordinated, intelligence-driven operations by various tactical units of the command, particularly the CP Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) and the Quick Response Squad.

“The Delta State Police Command, through sustained intelligence-led operations, has recorded major successes in our fight against kidnapping, violent crime and the proliferation of illegal arms,” the commissioner stated.

According to CP Adesola, operatives of CP-SAT arrested a suspected notorious inter-state kidnapper and armed robber, Abubakar Mohammed, following credible intelligence on a syndicate terrorising parts of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states.

He said the suspect was arrested on December 29, 2025, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and during interrogation led operatives to a bush along Tobia Village, Amasoma area of Airport Road, Bayelsa State, where a cache of arms buried in a sack was recovered.

Items recovered included one AK-47 rifle, 76 rounds of live ammunition and two AK-47 magazines.

“Further investigation led to another breakthrough on January 2, 2026, when the suspect guided operatives to another arms dump at Uyamuge Forest along the Ughelli–Warri axis,” CP Adesola said.

Recovered from the second location were one K-2 rifle, 49 rounds of live ammunition, three K-2 magazines, one pump-action gun and 32 live cartridges. The suspect remains in custody while the investigation continues.

The commissioner also disclosed that on January 6, 2026, CP-SAT operatives stormed the Ohoror community along the Ughelli–Patani Road following intelligence on suspected kidnappers.

He said the suspects opened fire on sighting the police, leading to a gun duel during which one suspect was fatally injured.

“One K-2 rifle, two locally made guns and live ammunition concealed in a bag were recovered from the scene,” he said, adding that the injured suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead, while a manhunt is ongoing for fleeing accomplices.

In another operation, CP Adesola said three suspected gunrunners and armed robbers were arrested on January 3, 2026, during a sting operation at Ovieta Street, Ughelli.

The suspects — Areuro Oke (38), Onos Echabor (47) and Akpofure Emmanuel (45) — were identified as buyer, middleman and accomplice in an illegal arms transaction.

Recovered from them were one pump-action gun and ₦280,000, said to be part payment for the weapon. Investigation, the police said, is ongoing.

The commissioner further announced the arrest of suspected drug barons during raids carried out on January 3 and January 5, 2026, at New Road by Ewereto Junction, Sapele, and Agofure Park, Effurun Roundabout, Warri.

Those arrested include Bemigho Omoghomi (28), Onoriode Samuel (46) and two others. Large quantities of illicit drugs were recovered.

CP Adesola also revealed that operatives of Area Command, Effurun, raided the shop of one Chioma Ada Ifuwe Wanogho along Sapele–Warri Road, recovering 45 wraps of substances suspected to be loud, SK, and a bag of dry weeds believed to be Indian hemp.

The suspect, who reportedly had been in the business for about four years, was arrested, and an investigation is ongoing.

Reassuring residents of the command’s resolve, CP Adesola said: “The Delta State Police Command under my leadership remains unwavering in its commitment to combating kidnapping, violent crime, illegal firearms and other vices.”

He urged members of the public to support the police with timely and credible information, while warning criminals that “all forms of criminality will be met with decisive and lawful action.”

The commissioner also advised parents to be cautious and closely monitor their wards, encouraging them to stay away from crime.
