Delta Police Relaunches Operation Velvet, Vows Zero Tolerance for Extortion in Traffic Crackdown

-

The Delta State Police Command has reactivated Operation Velvet across the state, launching an intensified crackdown on traffic offences as part of a nationwide directive from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at strengthening road safety and easing vehicular congestion.

According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the operation will target a broad range of offences, including reckless and dangerous driving, one-way violations, excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, illegal parking, and driving without valid documentation. Officers will also clamp down on unregistered vehicles, fake or concealed number plates, overloading, and unauthorised use of sirens.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to ensure the operation is properly enforced within their jurisdictions. He instructed that personnel be thoroughly briefed and closely supervised, stressing that enforcement must be carried out lawfully and with respect for the rights of members of the public.

CP Oyeniyi reiterated a strong warning from the IGP against any misuse of the operation, insisting Operation Velvet must not become a tool for extortion, harassment, intimidation, or unlawful seizure of vehicles and documents. He warned that any officer found culpable of corrupt practices or misconduct would face disciplinary action under existing police regulations.

The Command has called on motorists and other road users to comply with traffic laws and cooperate with officers on duty, while cautioning the public against offering bribes to evade enforcement.

The Delta State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the exercise with professionalism and accountability, urging all road users to support efforts toward safer roads and smoother traffic flow across the state.
