The leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated into a dramatic confrontation on Wednesday as FCT Minister Nyesom Wike clashed with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed at the party’s National Secretariat in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
ARISE News Correspondent Mary Chinda reported that both camps arrived at the secretariat determined to assert control, triggering a tense standoff that quickly degenerated into chaos.
Security operatives loyal to the opposing factions engaged in a free-for-all struggle over control of the premises, with heavy teargas fired around the vicinity as each side attempted to dislodge the other.
Governor Makinde arrived with Taofeek Arapaja, who was recently elected as the party’s National Secretary, while Wike held his ground alongside the embattled incumbent National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.
Anyanwu maintains that his tenure remains valid until December 8, 2025, and insists that he will not vacate the position.
The showdown has intensified concerns among party leaders, many of whom are accusing the police of failing to remain neutral as the PDP grapples with deepening internal divisions. The crisis threatens to further destabilise the main opposition party as it works to rebuild ahead of future elections.
