Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) last week held a crucial security meeting with Christian clerics in Ogun State ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
According to sources, the meeting took place at the DSS headquarters in Abeokuta and focused on safeguarding churches and worshippers during the festive period. Participants were reportedly advised to remain vigilant, particularly during church services and special programmes.
The DSS reportedly warned that worshippers should be cautious of individuals who sit close to them with bags and later abandon the items under the pretext of stepping out briefly. Such bags, officials cautioned, could contain explosive devices capable of causing serious harm to churches and congregants.
Churches represented at the meeting from different parts of Ogun State included St. Mary Catholic Church, led by its parish priest, Rev. Fr. Anthony Otegbola; the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG); Deeper Life Christian Church; Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel); Foursquare Gospel Church; the Anglican Church; the Methodist Church; and the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, among others.
Speaking after the meeting, Ifeanyi Ogbodo, Chairman of the Laity Council of St. Mary Catholic Church, Alaja, Ifo, Ogun State, urged parishioners to be extra cautious while attending Sunday Mass and other church activities, and to remain alert to suspicious persons and unattended bags within church premises.
