The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the death of a resident, Endurance Udeke, during a recent sting operation targeting suspected internet fraudsters (Yahoo Boys) in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
Udeke, a resident of apartment W6a, Periwinkle Estate, died on November 4, 2025, after allegedly jumping from the four-storey building in an apparent attempt to evade arrest by EFCC operatives.
According to the EFCC’s statement, the operation was carried out smoothly across multiple apartments within the estate, resulting in the arrest of four suspected internet fraudsters.
However, the Commission states that Udeke and one other resident of apartment W6a “got wind of the operation and tried to escape arrest by jumping down from the four-storey building.” Udeke did not survive the fall, despite immediate medical intervention by the anti-graft agency. The second resident who jumped survived the fall and is currently stable after receiving hospital treatment.
The EFCC expressed shock at the “suicidal action” and strongly maintained that there was no physical contact between its officers and the deceased before the incident.
“The Commission is shocked at the suicidal action of the deceased. There was no contact between officers of the Commission and the deceased before the unfortunate incident,” the statement reads.
The EFCC confirmed that it has reached out to Udeke’s family, providing them with details of the events leading to his death and the medical efforts made to save him. The agency reported that the family expressed appreciation for the medical interventions.
The incident has been officially reported to the police, who have commenced an investigation.
The EFCC concluded its statement with a reminder to the public: “While we await the outcome of the investigation, it is important to remind the public that no one with nothing to hide has reason to be afraid of EFCC sting operation.”
