Enugu Police Arrest Armed Robbery, Cultism Suspects

-

The Enugu State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on violent crimes, announcing the arrest of three male suspects linked to armed robbery and cultism in separate operations across the state.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, operatives recovered two firearms, fifteen live rounds of ammunition, multiple ATM cards, and other exhibits during the operations.

On August 23, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., officers of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) arrested Goodluck Hyacinth, 30, during a snap stop-and-search patrol at First Bus Stop, Abakpa, Enugu.

Police said seven rounds of 9mm live ammunition were found on him while he was travelling in a commercial tricycle.

The following day, August 24, 2026, at about 3:00 a.m., the VCRU raided a suspected criminal hideout at Akpaoga-Nike, Enugu East LGA. The suspects fled on sighting the operatives, abandoning an imitation gun and several ATM cards. Police confirmed that a manhunt for the fleeing suspects is ongoing.

Earlier, on August 17, 2026, police operatives attached to the Department of Operations intercepted a commercial tricycle along Lagos Street by Winners Junction, Ogui, Enugu. Two passengers fled, while Okeke Stephen Chidera, 24, and Ofefe Mathew Chukwuemeka, 22, were arrested.

A cut-to-size firearm and eight live cartridges were recovered. Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to being members of the Neo Black Movement (NBM) cult group.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, praised the operatives for their vigilance, stating:  “The Command remains determined to deny criminal elements the space to operate in Enugu State. We urge residents to remain vigilant and provide timely, credible information on criminal activities and suspicious persons.”

SP Daniel Ndukwe added that the arrested suspects will be charged in court once investigations are concluded.
