Enugu Police Intensify Crackdown on Unregistered Vehicles, Defaced Number Plates

-

The Enugu State Police Command has commenced intensified enforcement against unregistered vehicles and vehicles with obscured, defaced, or unlawfully covered registration number plates across the state as part of efforts to strengthen security and improve crime detection.

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, directed operatives of the command to strictly but professionally enforce existing regulations targeting such vehicles, citing the security risks associated with their use.

According to the command, the directive aligns with a standing order issued by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, mandating the impoundment of unregistered vehicles and the prosecution of offenders nationwide due to their frequent involvement in criminal activities and violations of traffic and security laws.

CP Giwa noted that vehicles without proper registration and those with tampered, concealed, or defaced number plates undermine law enforcement operations by making it difficult to identify suspects, investigate crimes, and track criminal movements.

He stressed that supervisory officers must ensure the enforcement exercise is carried out in accordance with the law while maintaining professionalism, civility, and respect for the rights of citizens.

The police commissioner also warned officers against using the operation as an avenue for extortion, harassment, or other forms of misconduct, stating that any personnel found culpable would face severe disciplinary action.

He urged motorists operating unregistered vehicles or using unlawfully covered, obscured, or defaced number plates to immediately comply with relevant regulations to avoid sanctions.

CP Giwa further called on residents of the state to remain vigilant and support ongoing security efforts by reporting suspicious persons and criminal activities to the nearest police station.

He also encouraged members of the public to report cases of police misconduct through the Enugu State Police Command’s Complaint Response Unit via 09160002486, 09160002487, 07059160602, or 08176255557. #Securitynewsalert.com
