FG Rallies Citizens, Media, Security Agencies Against Terrorism

-

The Federal Government has called on Nigerians, the media, civil society organisations, and security agencies to strengthen collaboration in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

Speaking at a National Press Briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris said defeating terrorism requires a united national response that transcends political, ethnic, religious, and regional differences.

“Terrorism has no tribe, no religion, and no political affiliation. Its only purpose is destruction,” Idris said, announcing the national call to action, #UniteAgainstTerror.

The Minister assured Nigerians that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to securing the safe return of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in recent attacks in Oyo and Borno States, describing it as “a top national priority.”

Security agencies, he said, have intensified intelligence gathering, surveillance, and coordinated rescue operations under direct presidential instruction.

On recent security gains, Idris said troops under Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East had eliminated over 50 terrorists in follow-up operations in Borno State, while operations across the North-West, North-Central, South-East, and South-South have dismantled criminal camps and disrupted kidnapping syndicates.

The Minister also highlighted judicial progress, pointing to convictions secured in the June 2022 terrorist attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, and what he described as one of the largest terrorism prosecution exercises in the country’s history, with hundreds of suspects currently on trial.

Idris urged the media to report terrorism-related incidents responsibly, warning against inadvertently amplifying the objectives of terrorist groups, and called on citizens to support security agencies with credible information.

“Nigeria has faced difficult moments before and emerged stronger. United in purpose and unwavering in resolve, we will ensure that terrorism has no future in Nigeria,” he said. #Securitynewsalert.com
