IGP Deploys DIG Ishyaku Mohammed to Lead Security Operations for Osun Governorship Election

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has deployed Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Ishyaku Mohammed to Osun State to coordinate security operations ahead of the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026.

The deployment, announced on Wednesday, forms part of the Nigeria Police Force’s security strategy to ensure a peaceful, secure and credible electoral process across the state.

According to the Force, DIG Mohammed will oversee the Police component of the election security arrangement and collaborate with other security agencies operating under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).

He will be supported by Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police deployed across Osun’s three senatorial districts to supervise operations, strengthen intelligence-led policing and ensure rapid responses to any security threats.

The Police said comprehensive security measures have been put in place to protect voters, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) personnel, election materials, polling units, collation centres, accredited observers and media practitioners before, during and after the election.

IGP Disu warned political actors, their supporters and other potential troublemakers against engaging in electoral violence or misconduct.

He said ballot snatching, voter intimidation, political thuggery and other electoral offences would attract “prompt arrest and prosecution.”

The Police chief also reiterated the ban on armed escorts, security aides and other unauthorised persons accompanying political office holders or VIPs to polling units and collation centres on election day.

He further stated that state-established security outfits, quasi-security groups and private security organisations are prohibited from participating in election security duties, in line with existing Nigeria Police Force directives.

The Nigeria Police Force assured residents, voters and visitors in Osun State of adequate security throughout the electoral process and urged eligible citizens to exercise their civic rights peacefully and without fear.

“The Force remains committed to professionalism, neutrality, respect for human rights, and the protection of the electoral process,” the statement added.
