IGP Disu Orders Sack, Prosecution of Policemen Connected To Effurun Killing

-

The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a man in Effurun, Delta State, a move that underscores a zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions.

The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, claimed the life of Mr Mene Ogidi and leads to public outrage over police conduct.

According to Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the officers linked to the shooting were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for accelerated disciplinary proceedings.

Placid said the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), after concluding its review, found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in clear violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms.

“The findings established unequivocally that the officer’s actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law,” he stated.

He added that the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of Usman and other officers found culpable, a decision already approved by the Inspector-General of Police and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.

Upon completion of administrative procedures, the officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution.

Reaffirming the Force’s position, Placid stressed that “no uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law,” warning that any officer found guilty of abuse of power would face both disciplinary and legal consequences.

The Inspector-General also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, acknowledging their loss and assuring them that justice would be pursued.

“He assures the family that this tragic incident will not be treated lightly and that justice will not only be done but seen to be done,” Placid said. #Securitynewsalert.com
