In a bold step to bolster maritime security and enhance the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, commissioned thirty-one (31) state-of-the-art combat gunboats on Wednesday, June 5, 2025, at the NPF Maritime Command Base, Obafemi Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The event marked a significant milestone in the Force’s strategic efforts to counter evolving security threats along Nigeria’s waterways, backwaters, inland channels, and coastal zones. The newly acquired gunboats are equipped with cutting-edge navigation and communication systems, as well as integrated solar-powered technology, enabling precision patrol, real-time coordination, and eco-friendly operations.
In his keynote address during the commissioning ceremony, IGP Egbetokun described the initiative as a “symbol of renewed commitment” to maritime safety, anti-crime patrols, and rescue missions across the nation’s aquatic territories. He emphasised that the deployment of these assets reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s dedication to sustainable law enforcement and modernised policing standards.
> “These gunboats are not just vessels; they represent our unwavering resolve to protect Nigeria’s waterways, safeguard lives and property, and dismantle criminal networks,” the IGP said. “The integration of solar-powered systems aligns with global best practices in green policing and highlights our leadership in environmentally responsible law enforcement.”
IGP Egbetokun further reiterated the importance of inter-agency collaboration, noting the vital role of synergy between the Police, Armed Forces, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), and other stakeholders in ensuring maritime security.
He also acknowledged the importance of intelligence-led policing and community engagement, pledging deeper collaboration with coastal communities to harness local intelligence and foster mutual trust.
Expressing appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, the IGP commended the President’s unwavering support and strategic investment in the modernization of the Nigeria Police Force. He noted that the commissioning of the boats is a testament to the administration’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of the Force to fulfill its constitutional mandate.
> “Under Mr. President’s visionary leadership, the Nigeria Police is undergoing a transformation marked by reform, modernisation, and professional excellence,” he added. “We remain committed to securing Nigeria with courage, integrity, and innovation.”
Among the dignitaries and senior police officers present at the occasion were: Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, DIG B. Wazhi, Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, AIG Adegoke Fayoade, mni, AIG, Special Protection Unit, AIG Tunji Disu, AIG, Mobile Police Force, AIG Funsho Adegboye.
Other top-ranking officers, representatives of sister security agencies, and members of the public were also in attendance to witness the momentous occasion.
The event concluded with an operational demonstration by Marine Police personnel, showcasing the capabilities of the newly commissioned boats and reinforcing the Force’s commitment to ensuring safety on Nigeria’s waters.
